Social Media Image Sizes 2023: Cheat Sheet for All Social Networks and the GaggleAMP Platform

Follow

Let’s cut to the chase - you need social media network dimensions for your creative and we have them. Plus we have a list of dimensions exclusive to the use of the GaggleAMP platform so that everything in your Gaggle appears in tip-top shape.

Let’s dig in.

Social Media Image Sizes: Why You Need to Get These Right

4.48 billion people currently use social media worldwide, up more than double from 2.07 billion in 2015. And the average social media user engages with an average of 6.6 different social media platforms. That’s a lot of potential exposure and, if we’re being honest, it’s human nature to judge a brand by its image so you’ll want to ensure you’re portraying it right.

Social media images need to be sized for each platform. It’s important because:

  • Each social network has its own requirements. This includes the size of the image, media supported, and more. Just because the image looks great on one platform doesn’t mean it will look right on others.
  • It avoids pixelation and stretching. When images are properly scaled, they appear more professional and retain your full brand message.
  • Images optimized for your social channel’s feed perform better. Again, brand matters, and an image that appears too big, too small, stretched out, or oddly filtered will be judged accordingly.
  • It's professional. When your employees share content in your employee advocacy program, it’s a direct reflection of them.

LinkedIn Image Sizes

When creating content for employee advocacy on LinkedIn, it's best to stick to the recommended sizes below from LinkedIn. And don’t forget to test your images to ensure they render the way you expect.

Facebook Dimension Recommendations:

When pulling together Facebook content, it is best to use the recommended pixel sizes below to aid in faster loading times. Images should be uploaded as a JPG or PNG to avoid distortion.

  • Profile photos will display at 170 x 170 pixels on most computers but can display as small as 128 x 128 pixels on mobile devices.
  • Cover photos are recommended to be 851 x 315 pixels and ideally less than 100MB. On desktop, this will display as 820 x 312 pixels but only 640 x 360 pixels on mobile. Facebook does have a minimum size of 400 x 150 pixels.
    • Cover photos for events are recommended to be 1200 x 628 pixels and they cannot be changed or edited once they are added to an event.

Post_Content__-_Facebook.png

  • Timeline and post photos are recommended to be 1200 x 630 pixels with a minimum size of 600 x 315 pixels. These images are automatically resized when uploaded to display at 500 pixels wide and to fit an aspect ratio of 1.91:1.
  • Carousel photos: If you have more than one image being uploaded, images should be 1080 x 1080 pixels with a 1:1 ratio.

Stories_-_Facebook.png

  • Stories: 1080 x 1920 pixels with an aspect ratio of 9:16. It’s important that the photo does not have a width smaller than 500 pixels.
    • Pro-Tip: Do you have a story with text? Avoid adding text to your image on the top and bottom of your image (approximately 250 pixels from the top and bottom). Your brand's profile photo and/or buttons can cover this area and you do not want it to cover your CTA.

GaggleAMP Facebook Activities

GaggleAMP follows Facebook’s lead in image sizing but does have some limitations when it comes to the Facebook Photo activity.

While all image file types are accepted, including GIFs, you should be aware of the size restrictions on the GaggleAMP platform. Only photos uploaded that are less than 10MB in size will render correctly on the Facebook newsfeed. If an image uploaded is greater than 10MB in size the image may not load correctly on Facebook, despite Facebook having a higher file size requirement.

Instagram Image Sizes

Unlike other social media platforms, Instagram is a heavily visual platform in which the rendering of your image is front and center. Due to its very visual nature, you’ll need to ensure your content is top-notch to stand apart in the scroll.

Profile_-_Instagram.png

Instagram Dimension Recommendations:

  • Profile photos are recommended to be 320 x 320 pixels, and while they upload as a square, they display as a circle so you will need to check your crop.

Post_Content_-_Instagram.png

  • Stories must retain an aspect ratio of 9:16 to avoid awkward cropping. The recommended image size is 1080 x 1920 pixels.
  • Feed photos render in three different sizes:
    • Landscape: 1080 x 566 pixels
    • Portrait: 1080 x 1350 pixels
    • Square: 1080 x 1080 pixels

It’s important to know that the aspect ratio can vary between 1.91:1 to 4:5. As such, the recommended width of the image is 1080 pixels and has a height between 566 and 1350 pixels, depending on the image type.
If you share an image on Instagram that is over 1080 pixels, Instagram will size it down. And if you upload an image that does not fit the recommended ratio, Instagram will automatically crop the image to fit the ratio.

  • Instagram ads have a supported aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5 with a maximum width of 1080 pixels, and minimum width of 320 pixels.
    • Landscape ad: 1080 x 566 pixels
    • Square: 1080 x 1080 pixels
  • Thumbnails: It's recommended you upload it at 1080 pixels wide but it will render a display size of 161 x 161 pixels. The larger upload is important because while some images render smaller, there are versions of these thumbnails that render as large as 1080 x 1080 pixels.

The GaggleAMP Community Module

The Community module allows for a safe space for Members and Managers to host internal conversations. This add-on module essentially creates an internal social media network for you and your colleagues. These Conversations allow you to share and contribute text, a link, images, and videos, just like a regular social media post, but it stays internal.

Here are a few tips when using photos and videos in the  GaggleAMP Community.

Community Photos

  • Acceptable file types: JPG, PNG
  • Max file size: 10 MB

Community Videos

  • Acceptable file types: MP4, MOV
  • Max file size: 200 MB

GaggleAMP Channels

GaggleAMP Channels allow Managers the ability to effortlessly segment content streams to make sure Members see only the relevant Activities to engage with. Channels can be created by both Managers and Members and can be Public or Private.

Much like a social media network, Channel Icons are reminiscent of a profile photo, and Channel Banners operate much like a cover photo. Here are some tips on how to use both.

Channel Icons

GaggleAMP_Channel_Icons.png

Channel icons are saved as 128 x 128 pixels. While any file size is accepted, the file will be cropped to 128 x 128 pixels before it saves.

Images are proportionally resized until the smaller of the height and width are equal to 128 pixels.

Helpful tip: If you upload an image that is wider than tall, the horizontal at 128px will be kept and everything else to the left and right of the center will be cropped out. For example, this original image is 964 x 123 pixels so this is where the crop will start until 128 x 128 pixels are reached.

If you upload an image that is taller than it is wide, the vertical center will be kept at 128 pixels. Everything above or below this center will be cropped out. For example, this original image is 266 x 1348 pixels. The vertical center is where the crop will start until 128 x 128 pixels are reached.

Icons can be added to any channel by editing the Channels ‘details’ page and adding an image. If you choose to not include an icon on your Channel, it will not affect your view on a desktop device, but it will appear as a gray circle from your Channel view on mobile.

Channel Banner Images

GaggleAMP_Channel_Banners.png

Channel banners can visually tell your Members what content to expect in the Channel. While any image size is accepted and stored, only a portion of the image will be displayed on the Channel banner.

GaggleAMP Rewards

While there is no pixel limitation for images used in GaggleAMP Rewards, the maximum image size you can upload is 3MB. Acceptable file types are JPG and PNG.

Helpful tips:

The aspect ratio is 3.4:1 and if your image is smaller than this ratio, the system will not add any black space to buffer the sides. That said, there is no one dimension that is ideal in the banner size, so long as the aspect ratio is 3.4:1.

Just like with the Channel Icons, the Channel Banner will select a portion of the image when the image size is too large. For example, if the image is wider than it is tall, an original image of 964 x 123 pixels will select the center (where the number three appears) but then only display content to the left and right or center for 418 pixels.

In the instance where the image is taller than it is wide, the system will find the vertical center of the image and select the space equal to the original width x the new height. So, in this example, an image that is 914 x 1348 pixels will truncate down to 914 x 269 pixels and only render that image on the Channel.

Don’t worry about memorizing all of these dimensions - they’ll always be here for you. Access these dimensions by the network for your broader social media needs and you’ll be on the road to having an excellent visual display on social media.
